Why Not an Existing Solution?

One of the questions submitted on the info gathering form was “why not just use Mastodon Social”?

To be perfectly honest, I’m leaning towards an off-the-shelf open source solution, such as Mastodon Social. But…

  1. We need to decide on an organizational structure to run and support the social network. When it comes to moderating and potentially removing accounts there needs to be a board of directors making those decisions.
  2. We need to figure out what features are key to pick the right solution.
  3. We might land on multiple solutions (on the same server with the same login) to meet the needs of the community.

I also want to incorporate a voting solution to support the the non-profit board and to gather feedback from as many users as possible. If its open, transparent, and users/members have a say in running the organization then I think its more likely to be sustainable for the long-term.
